In 1917, Noble bought out Hinds and entered into a partnership with William Barnes, son of his old friend Charles; the name of the store was changed accordingly to Barnes & Noble.[12][13] Charles Barnes had opened a book-printing business in Wheaton, Illinois in 1873; William Barnes divested himself of his ownership interest in his father’s firm just before his partnership with Noble and it would go on to become Follett Corporation. Although the flagship store once featured the motto “founded in 1873,” the C.M. Barnes-Wilcox Company never had any connection to Barnes & Noble other than the fact that both were partly owned (at different times) by William Barnes.” •. I suspect it’s just easier for them to support a reader on a web browser and it has the added advantage of taking us through their website where we may shop for more books.

That is the most positive conclusion I can come to, considering the abysmal quality of their app and website. Expect things to time out, 404 you, crash, and about every level of frustration imagineable. After no less than 12 tries to get into my account to change my address, and continuoually reaching error messages, I changed my address and placed an order, only to have that order shipped to the address I had deleted. Two weeks later, and I still haven't received my full refund. Email Help requests go unanswered, and chat is okay, but only if the site is actually working, which is about 25% of the time. When B&N goes out of business, one of the primary factors will be their incompetent and horrid attention to having a remotely useful online presence. Weems, ragingly incompetent Barnes & Noble does not want any online business.

I doubt very many people actually use the Nook programs to read on a computer, but taking it away is going to turn people off if they think they can’t easily have offline backups of their purchased ebooks. Perhaps B&N is just updating their programs or website and the removal of the Nook for computer apps is just temporary. After all, the download links for Nook for PC and Nook for Mac still work if you know how to find them. The download links are located below but I don’t know how long they will remain active.
Nook for PC also lets you subscribe to newspapers and magazines just like the Nook device. You can browse the available journals online, and even try them out for 14 days for free. Note that eNewspaper and eMagazine subscriptions may only work inside the US.
The app deletes books from the device without permission. The “recent reads” are books I read three years ago and I have to dig for the actual book I am reading every time. Detail vs cover view does not toggle for the library list, only for shelves which I consider a waste of time and don’t use. The registered devices no longer show up on my account on the site either. It has become annoying enough that I have been using Kindle more and more, and the only books I have gotten through B&N in ages were from gift certificates people gave me. Also, downloads take forever.
This system’s installer files are understood as BarnesNobleNookReader.exe, bndr2_setup_latest.exe, BNDReader.exe, NewList.exe, Pc2.exe or pc3.exe, etc. NOOK 4.8.1.21 For PC APK: With NOOK 4.8.1.21, you can read virtually everything you used to carry on reading a paper, not to mention, teenaged vampire romances. There’s plenty of nonfiction for the more days.

Barnes & Noble did not immediately respond to PCMag's request for comment, but confirmed the news to The Digital Reader, which noted that B&N last updated its PC app in Nov. 2011 and the Mac version in March 2012. Still, customers noticed the change, with some 'What happened to the Nook for Mac and Nook for PC apps?' '[In my opinion] this is all a bit strange,' in another forum on Thursday, adding that they haven't been able to read newly downloaded books on the Nook for Web feature. 'For me, this is a good reason to buy books from Google Play, as their web app actually lets me read everything I buy, they have apps for all my devices, and I can sideload to my [Nook Simple Touch],' keriflur said. 'Right now, I can't read my B&N books on my work laptop or my Mac, so why should I buy more?'
Nook also lets you search the contents of your eBook from the top right corner of the application. You can also add eBooks that you already own to Nook for PC. This is a great way to make it your main eBook reader without purchasing a ton of new books. In the my library section on the left sidebar, select my stuff. Now you can click Add New Item to import an eBook. Nook for PC lets you add PDF, ePub, and pdb formatted eBooks, including PDFs secured with Adobe Digital Editions DRM. However, you cannot import your eBooks from other eReader programs such as Kindle for PC, as these include DRM that can only be read by Kindle.
I’ve never seen such apathy. They seem to not care about drawing in and retaining customers.

Someday my hope is that DRM will become a thing of the past, but that’s beyond the scope of this comment. I believe I’d be able to move books over (using ADE) to the Nook if need be, but I didn’t try since I already have my library on my Nook. I run Windows 7 so as stated in the article, there is no native reading app.
Annefj, A small quibble I’ve owned a Nook Color since they first came out, then continued to read on my iPad when it’s battery stopped taking a charge. I now also own a Nook Paperwhite and the problem I have with the device and the app is font size. On my iPad Pro, I can’t get the font size to increase as much as I need for my poor eyesight and on the Paperwhite, the largest font size is so big it seems only a few words fit on the screen, while the next size down isn’t quite large enough.
Is it because it is updating all those stupid preview samples in the store first? It sounds silly, but when you are in a hurry to leave and the app has taken all the books off yet again, it adds to the frustration considerably to have to stand there and wait for the download to finish.

Nook App For Mac Pro
The nook I bought a few years ago no longer could be charged because of a faulty USB port, so I could only read my purchased books on NOOK for web. Now I cant even do that. No reasons were given after long frustrating calls. Well, B&N has in my book been just awful! Been on line with them several times. They say they don’t enter your computer to remove their software. However, if you upgrade it as their popup requires, poof, your reader is gone!
